Heavyweights Morrison, Ruiz Jr. and Johnson return this weekend

Undefeated Trey Lippe Morrison returns from a fifteen-month absence this Friday night after suffering a hand injury in training for a summer fight last year.

The 28 year-old son of former world champion Tommy ‘The Duke’ Morrison was due to return on June 9 of 2017 following three victories in 2016. An ailment during camp meant Lippe had to undergo surgery and missed a big chunk of what was supposed to be his learning curve leading up to a 2018 title fight.

The Oklahoma native is now a year behind his plan but is due to fight Felipe Romero over six rounds on the non-TV undercard of this Friday’s Showtime Boxing event topped by the interim WBC super-lightweight clash between Regis Prograis and Julius Indongo.

With a perfect 13-0 record and 100% KO ratio into the bargain, Lippe has already been compared to his famous father and will be looking to be busy once again as he shakes off the cobwebs.

Switching to Saturday evening and another extended absentee from the division, Andy Ruiz Jr. makes his long-awaited comeback in anย eight-rounder against Devin Vargas.

Ruiz last fought when losing out to Joseph Parker for the WBO title in New Zealand before Christmas in 2016 and needs a victory to put himself back into contention on the world scene.

‘Destroyer’ has been handed a spot on the Top Rank bill headlined by Oscar Valdez making a defense of his WBO featherweight belt against Scott Quigg.

Over in Braunlage, Germany, Kevin ‘Kingpin’ Johnson is slated to participate in a ten round bout opposite undefeated Petar Milas aiming for a third win in a row.

The veteran, 38, has record two low-key victories since losing to Kubrat Pulev last April and has the opportunity to move further up the rankings if he can take the young Croatian’s ‘0’ at theย Maritim Berghotel.

Also scheduled for outings this week are former World Boxing Super Series participant Robert Brant following his loss to Juergen Braehmer and ex-world title holder Jack Culcay, who hopes to stop a run of back-to-back losses against Craig Cunningham inย Guetersloh.
