Shakur Stevenson rejected the opportunity to sign for Oscar De La Hoya at Golden Boy Promotions before receiving a cold reply.
The WBC lightweight champion was the first target for De La Hoya’s new segment, ‘Clap Back Thursdays,’ where the GBP Chairman fires back on social media. Stevenson became the focus of De La Hoya’s venom in his maiden installment.
“Let’s start with the WBC ordering Shakur Stevenson vs William Zepeda. Ordering, what does that mean? They ordered Canelo vs Benavidez three years ago, but that hasn’t happened.
“William will make his decision really soon, and he has three other options.”
It was then Stevenson’s turn alone.
“You’re a free agent. You’re a great fighter and talent, but not for me,” added De La Hoya on the multi-weight world champion. “I believe that when somebody says you’re not fighting for the public, I cannot promote them.”

Shakur Stevenson rejects Oscar De La Hoya
Stevenson responded to De La Hoya by stating, “He’s mad because he found out I’m not signing with him. It’s okay. You’ll get over it. And I never knew there were p**** Mexicans. All the ones I know have cojones.”
After leaving Top Rank, Stevenson is favored to sign with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing after praising both in recent interviews. Whether that move will push the Newark fighter toward facing the best in the division is another story entirely.
Gervonta Davis faces Vasiliy Lomachenko later in the year, so the top two targets are off the menu. This scenario will give Hearn time to assemble his usual three-fight plan for new signings.
Stevenson will likely fight again in his hometown in the final quarter of 2024 before aiming for a unification in the spring of 2025 and a massive fight at the end of next year. It will then be time to move up to 140 pounds unless the decision is made sooner due to a lack of solid options.
