Due to Robert Helenius relinquishing the EBU belt rather than accepting a rematch with mandatory challenger Chisora, a position has opened up which number two Joshua is next in line to fill.
That means everything is in place for a huge blockbuster battle between Chisora and Joshua on April 9 at the O2 Arena in London and Sauerland is pleased with how discussions over the encounter have begun.
“We have started negotiations with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom,” Sauerland exclusively told World Boxing News on Thursday.
“The fight is obviously a huge one for the UK and we have had good early discussions. Ultimately, I am confident we can reach an agreement.
“Del really wants the fight and I have not heard that Joshua does not want it as for him it is a big step up to fight for the European title, but I guess a logical one. Whether that will be successful for him, well obviously Del and Sauerland have other ideas.
“On the other hand, if they do not feel ready then that is understandable. They had a tough fight in December and Anthony is a huge prospect so taking the foot off the pedal would be understandable, but we hope that the fight gets made.”
Joshua, 27, has won all 15 of his pro contests by knockout on the back of considerable amateur success – including a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics, whilst Chisora has the experience of already being a European and world title challenger.
‘AJ’ is highly-ranked at number two by the WBC and looking to head into a world title shot by the end of the year, although Chisora will be hoping to put a spanner in the works if both sides are in acceptance of what will be a high-profile spring battle.
