Exclusive: Fres Oquendo back in training, wants his vacant WBA shot versus Lucas Browne

The 43 year-old is currently stipulated to have one final WBA title shot following legal action stemming from his 2014 fight with Ruslan Chagaev and is in line to meet Lucas Browne for the vacant belt.

Chagaevโ€™s retirement has left ex-opponents Oquendo and Browne on a collision course, and according to the manager of โ€˜The Big Oโ€™, the fight could take place in the coming months.

โ€œFres is training, he’s running and boxing in the gym,โ€ Tom Tsatas exclusively told World Boxing News.

โ€œWe havenโ€™t heard nothing on anything yet but I hope we get a shot at the real WBA title soon.โ€

Browne was hoping to fight Wladimir Klitschko on December 10 for the โ€˜superโ€™ WBA title until the Ukrainian pulled out injured, but Tsatas doesnโ€™t care who they pit Oquendo against as long as their chance is granted.

โ€œI don’t know who or when but we will fight any of these clowns. It’s up to the WBA, promoters and attorneys but December 10th is probably too early right now.

โ€œKlitschko is too chicken, or as they say in the old west โ€˜yellerโ€™ to fight Fres anyway. Fres sparred his brother Vitali a few years back and Fres was no pushover. But who cares?

โ€œWe will Fight somebody for a WBA title and Fres will be the second oldest heavyweight Champion in history either way. Wlad is irrelevant now in boxing so if itโ€™s Browne weโ€™ll take it,โ€ he added.

Aussie Browne could potentially move on with his career with some sort of warm-up now having been put in limbo by the Anthony Joshua v Klitschko on-off saga, whilst setting up a fight with Oquendo for the spring of 2017.

Should the WBA sanction Browne v Oquendo for the vacant title, which they have been ordered to, that could leave Klitschko with only one place to go, fighting Joshua for the โ€˜superโ€™ and IBO titles in the UK around the same time next year.
