Former undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford is no longer holding any titles at the weight after confirming his decision to the WBA.
The World Boxing Association confirmed the news as Crawford decided to remain at 154 pounds after making his debut at the weight on August 3.
‘Bud’ defeated Israil Madrimov for the WBA super welterweight crown at Riyadh Season’s US debut card following a closely fought contest. As speculation grows that Crawford could fight Canelo Alvarez in 2025, Crawford made his intentions clear regarding his elevation of poundage.
Crawford’s decision has a knock-on effect on the now former regular titleholder Eimantas Stanionis.
The WBA said via a statement sent to World Boxing News, “According to what he formally communicated to the pioneer organization, Terence Crawford decided to remain champion in the super welterweight division of the World Boxing Association and vacate his welterweight belt.
“The American sent a letter in which he informed his decision to keep the 154-pound belt and vacate the 147-pound belt, which will leave Lithuanian Eimantas Stanionis as the only welterweight champion.
“Crawford won the title last August 3 with his victory over Israil Madrimov in Los Angeles. At that time, he was the champion of two different divisions. He has decided to stay in super welter and continue his career in that category.
“The WBA received the communication and responded to Crawford with a letter signed by the director of the championships committee, Carlos Chavez, in which he acknowledged receipt and sent a wave of thanks and recognition,” they concluded.
As WBN reported, Crawford will likely remain out of action until Canelo decides his Cinco de Mayo 2025 opponent. That finalization is expected around late January or early February as Crawford seeks the most significant payday of his career.
