Former Pound for Pound king Gennadiy Golovkin has been offered the chance to return to the ring after a year out following his second defeat to Canelo Alvarez in 2022.
“GGG” walked away from his middleweight titles following a super middleweight defeat to Canelo, which many saw as an equaling of their saga.
Golovkin won the first fight, which was scored a draw. Canelo then took the second and dominated the third against an older challenge.
All-in-all, a win for each and one sharing of the spoils is seen as a fair assessment.
After failing to make a dent with Canelo and seemingly walking away with a final huge payday, the punching master has one more offer to consider.
Gennadiy Golovkin vs John Ryder
John Ryder, Canelo’s last opponent, has put a homecoming deal on the table for Golovkin. The hardman Brit is keen to keep his reputation in the top tier by targeting the most prominent names.
Speaking to Mirror Fighting, Ryder outlined his intentions.
“I’d love to fight Golovkin,” Ryder confirmed. “I know he’s talking about another fight back in Kazakhstan. I’d love to be in the opposite corner.
“I don’t mind going into enemy territory, why not? A little world tour to finish off my professional career. We’ll go to Kazakhstan for Golovkin and maybe to America for [Caleb] Plant or Mexico for [Jaime] Munguia.”
Adding that he won’t be solely focusing on the veteran, Ryder said: “I’m not going to hold out on that. I will get back to training in early September. Then anything from October onwards will be good.
“I want the biggest and best fights possible now. I’ve not got too long left in this sport. My dream is to become world champion still, but I don’t have the time now to sit around and wait for opportunities.”
Canelo performance
“The Gorilla” pushed Canelo hard in his own backyard and has a moral win over Callum Smith in his locker. In addition, Ryder would potentially begin as a slight favorite if the Golovkin fight did happen.
Ryder believes his Canelo performance has elevated him to that upper echelon.
“I’ve learned so much from that Canelo fight, just how up a level they do things. Nothing is rushed. Everything is planned and done with conviction.
“You think that you’re having success, but he’s six or seven moves ahead. It lures you into a false sense of security. I know I will be such a better fight coming back from that loss.”
