Canelo Alvarez claimed a unanimous decision over a Jaime Munguia in an entertaining dust up at the T-Mobile Arena.
The undisputed Super-Middleweight champion dropped Munguia in the fourth after a slow start but built up to a dominant victory after twelve rounds.
In the end, the best fighter won and spoke with confidence about his triumph.
“This win means a lot. I’m glad that I gave him this opportunity. Munguia is a great guy and a great champion. He’s gonna have a great career. I’m very proud that all the Mexicans are here watching us.
“I took my time. I have a lot of experience. Munguia is a great fighter. He’s strong and smart. But I have 12 rounds to win the fight and I did. I did really good and I’m proud of it.
“He’s strong, but he’s a little slow. I could see every punch. That’s why I’m the best.
“When I retire, my numbers will say what position I’m in. I know there’s a lot of great Mexican fighters in the past, but I’m the best fighting right now.
“I’m gonna rest and enjoy my family. If the money is right, I can fight right now. I’ve fought everyone and I can do what I want.”
Munguia said: “I came out strong and was winning the early rounds. I let my hands go, but he’s a fighter with a lot of experience. The loss hurts because it’s my first loss and I felt strong.
“There’s no doubt I would have beaten anyone else tonight. He has a lot of experience. I started well, but he’s a fighter who creates a lot of problems.”
In the co-feature, Mario Barrios defend his WBC Interim Welterweight Title after dropping Fabian Maidana in the third round.
Barrios came through another damaged eye to hit 29-2 as Maidana dropped to 22-3.
WBC Interim featherweight champion Brandon Figueroa defended his green and gold strap with a devastating body shot at the very last second of the ninth round.
Figueroa recorded the 25th win of his career against one loss and one draw as Jessie Magdaleno crumbled from the blow.
Defending the WBA secondary welterweight champion to Terence Crawford’s full strap, Eimantas Stanionis enhanced record to 15-0 against a game Gabriel Maestre.
Out-punching Maestre for the majority of the contest, Stanionis inflicted a first defeat in eight bouts on the challenger, who dropped to 6-1-1.
After twelve rounds, scores read 119-109, 118-110 and 117-111.
At super welterweight, Jesus Ramos halted Johan Gonzalez in the ninth of a scheduled ten rounds.
Putting Gonzalez on the canvas hard, the referee stepped in awarding the stoppage for Ramos after another knockdown.
Vito Mielnicki dropped and defeated Ronald Cruz via unanimous verdict. ‘White Magic’ put Cruz down twice as he improved his record to 18-1, 12 KOs.
Cruz is now 19-4-1 following the ten-round loss.
Number one IBF Super Middleweight contender William Scull pushed to 22-0 after dropping Sean Hemphill in the fifth round of eight.
Scull, who could conceivably fight Canelo if the IBF orders the fight, won by scores of 79-92, 78-73 and 76-75 on the scorecards.
Early esults saw Julian Bridges move to 5-0 at lightweight with a unanimous decision victory over Jabin Chollet. Bridges handed Chollet his first loss as he drops to 9-1.
At just over the light heavyweight limit, Lawrence King can now boast a 16-1 record following a six-round unanimous verdict against Anthony Hollaway. Scores read 59-55 across the board.
A further lightweight contest saw Adrian Torres go eight undefeated by taking every round of six against Arsen Poghosyan.
