As the world awaits a super-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao with baited breath, it seems there are those who believe the clash is already doomed and both will have alternative opponents for their next bouts.
Despite denials to WBN by Cotto’s advisor Gaby Pengaricano that a Mayweather fight is close, and numerous attempts to get the slightest hint from the fighter’s representatives, a final decision is shrouded in secrecy as an official announcement draws nearer in the next few days.
A fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao has been longed for since 2008 when the pair were first crossed into the same weight division, although a total of three failed attempts are on the verge and putting the multi-million dollar contest off the table for good.
Pacquiao, 36, has been in the United Kingdom of late where the Filipino held talks with Amir Khan over an encounter on May 30, possibly in London at Wembley Stadium, which was a necessity following the initial reports that Cotto was well and truly in the frame for a rematch.
With Khan on board, Pacquiao can rest easy knowing that his next fight is virtually in the bag either way, but there is a growing unrest amongst fans that want the ‘Pacman’ to be given the chance to put a first dent in Mayweather’s perfect record.
Social media campaigns using the hashtags #FightPacquiao and #BoycottMayweather are gathering support in an attempt to force the pound for pound king to avoid a second meeting with Cotto, and until Mayweather does put everyone out of their misery and face Pacquiao, the gripes will continue to sour the American’s reputation.
We are all hanging on Mayweather’s every word as usual with an announcement of this magnitude, but even more unfortunate than that – is the fact that the ‘Money’ man wouldn’t have it any other way.
