Promoter Eddie Hearn wants to at least get the ball rolling with Deontay Wilder’s team ahead of a possible Anthony Joshua fight.
Hearn is hopeful of landing Joshua the biggest fish of all. Provided the WBC champion comes through Tyson Fury on December 1.
As WBN exclusively revealed, Wilder’s representative Shelly Finkel doesn’t want to get in too deep with Hearn until after the Fury Pay-Per-View.
It would be unwise for Wilder to assume he’ll defeat such a dangerous fighter as Fury. Although as Hearn explained, he’s not asking for the unification to be fully agreed or even signed prior.
All the Matchroom boss wants is to keep dialogue and potentially skate over terms. This is in order to have a deal secured quickly at the end of the year.
“What I want his legacy to be, which is something he shares, one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. To be the undisputed champion is the ultimate goal, it might happen as soon as April 13,” Hearn told Sky Sports.
“We are starting the conversations now. I don’t want to wait and start from scratch on December 1 as then we’d be under pressure.
“I want to get a feel now and see what deal Wilder’s team may accept. Then we can get somewhere close.
“It’s amazing to see this young man go from his O2 debut as a young kid out of the Olympics, to where he is now.
“He’s the biggest figurehead in the sport of boxing. A trailblazer and the biggest idol, icon and ambassador in the sport. I’m very proud of him,” he purred.

The fans still remain sceptical the fight will happen. Over 50% of the ongoing WBN Poll into the matter believing a rematch with Dillian Whyte is already on the cards.
Joshua v Whyte seems something of a pointless exercise to many, following a previously damning knockout in 2015.
‘AJ’ planted Whyte to the canvas on that occasion at The O2 and there are plenty who see a repeat happening again.
Wilder is the fight everybody wants, but Fury could blow the whole thing out of the water with victory in Los Angeles.
