Alfonso Gómez, a prominent participant in “The Contender” reality show, will soon be trading leather at 43.
The former Welterweight Champion and two-time world title challenger against Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez has officially announced his return to the boxing ring. With his comeback aimed for December of this year, Gomez plans to continue his legacy in the sport and use his platform as an influencer to deliver a divine message.
“My return to boxing is not just about competition; it’s a mission to be a testimony of God. I have experienced a profound spiritual awakening, a change that has led me to align my life and boxing technique with holistic, organic, and spiritual principles,” he said.
“Boxing, for me, now goes beyond the physical; it’s an expression of faith and purpose.”
Alfonso Gomez trains for comeback
This week, Gomez has begun an intensive five-month training camp at Forj Boxing Club. In addition, his journey will be documented and shared through posts, stories, reels, and live sessions on his social media, giving followers exclusive access to his preparation and evolution.
Known on his channels as Boxeador Despierto, Gomez has fought in both welterweight and middleweight classes. He is looking to capitalize on the current trend of matchups between boxers and MMA fighters and has expressed a desire to challenge Nick Diaz, a prominent figure in mixed martial arts, in a middleweight [boxing limit] bout.
“Fighting Nick Diaz would be the perfect opportunity to demonstrate that success and championship can be achieved through divine means, not just lucrative ones,” explained Gomez. “My goal is to show that greatness in the ring can be attained through faith and dedication to a higher purpose.”
Plans for his return include possible venues in California, such as the HP Pavilion in San José, where he previously fought Shawn ‘Showtime’ Porter, or the Dignity Health Sports Park, where he has fought four times.
Furthermore, Gomez concluded his announcement by expressing gratitude to the boxing community for their ongoing support and his desire to inspire others with his return to the sport.
“All glory to God, Praise the Lord, Alhamdulillah!”
