LAS VEGAS — Gervonta Davis and David Benavidez could star together, in separate fights, on the same Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view on Prime Video in December.
That’s according to Sampson Boxing founder Sampson Lewkowicz, who confirmed to World Boxing News this week that he anticipated his boxer’s return to the ring in the coming months.
World Boxing News reported recently that ‘Tank’ Davis was in line for a November return. This is part of our wider feature on the return of Al Haymon and an imminent schedule of events from PBC.
We understand Tank’s return has been pushed back a month. Per Lewkowicz, it could be one half of a box office double header with Benavidez.
“That is most likely what will happen,” Lewkowicz told WBN. “It will happen.
“David has already started training for December 14,” Lewkowicz added. “And after that, he will be the mandatory for [the] Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitri Bivol [winner].”
The bout would be at 175 pounds, Lewkowicz said — the second time he’ll have fought in that division.
An end-of-year bill would not be the first time Tank and Benavidez have worked together as Davis headlined a June 15 card, for a lightweight knockout win over Frank Martin. In the co-main that night, Benavidez out-pointed Oleksandr Gvozdyk as the Mexican ‘Monster’ tested the waters at light heavyweight.
According to a World Boxing News source with knowledge of the situation, Jose Valenzuela is a possible opponent lined up for Davis later this year.
The fight would land on pay-per-view.
Though Prime Video regards pay-per-view figures as proprietary information, World Boxing News understands that the first PBC on Prime Video event, which featured a bloody war between Sebastian Fundora and Tim Tszyu, generated more than 100,000 sales in the US.
For its second PPV this year, which had Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Jaime Munguia in the main event, there were approximately 650,000 sales.
Considering the name value of Tank and Benavidez, one source with knowledge of the situation told us that insiders anticipated slightly more for their June double-header than the numbers this fights generated.
A December double-header is likely PBC and Prime Video’s second attempt to make the partnership a hit with fight fans.
