Floyd Mayweather baffled by Chavez fight, ‘Father, son or both?’

Floyd Mayweather cut a bemused figure when asked about a possible fight with Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez on September 16 in Las Vegas.

The five-weight world champion was sitting down for a media question and answer session ahead of his rematch with John Gotti III this weekend. ‘Money’ was genuinely caught off guard when the subject came up.

Asked what he thought about the Chavez encounter, Mayweather said, “The father or the son or both in one night?”

When told it was the father, 62-year-old Chavez Sr., Mayweather replied, “What? Do they want me to use one hand?

“I could use no hands,” he added.

Since arriving in Mexico for his latest exhibition, Mayweather has been nothing but respectful. The question certainly blindsided him despite Chavez himself posting the date and a fight poster on social media.

When discussing competing in Mexico for the first time in his career, Mayweather positively mentioned Chavez despite his wins over his uncle and former trainer Roger.

“The pedigree of Mexico boxing is truly unbelievable. You talk about the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez; my uncle Roger Mayweather fought him twice. He came up short, but he fought him twice. It is always about competing and going up against the best. So, Saturday it is what it is. I’ve already faced the best.”

On WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman’s recent loss of his mother and his appointment of Richard Schaefer as CEO, Mayweather concluded, “The WBC is by far the best boxing organization in the sport of boxing. My prayers go out to Mauricio [Sulaimรกn], his family, and his mother. I’m happy to be here and have the opportunity to display my talent and put on a show.

“We chose a great guy to run Mayweather Promotions in Richard Schaefer. We couldn’t have chosen a better guy. He is a very smart businessman, and we’re here to put on a show. That’s what it’s all about. To entertain the people from all around the world, from all walks of life.”

Mayweather vs Gotti occurs this weekend in Mexico. DAZN will broadcast the event in all territories.
