Rolly Romero knows Canelo undercard fight is must-win

Rolly Romero aims to get back in the mix at 140 pounds when the former WBA secondary titleholder faces Manuel Jaimes on September 14.

Romero was called to prop up the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga undercard in the fall despite losing to Isaac Cruz in March. Following the setback to Cruz and a controversial victory over Ismael Barroso at The Cosmopolitan in May 2023, Romero features on a PBC Pay-Per-View card from the T-Mobile Arena.

The 28-year-old aims to take full advantage.

โ€œThis fight is about making a statement and returning to the win column. As always, Iโ€™m coming for the knockout,” said Romero, who fights in his own backyard again. โ€œFighting in my hometown is always special. The crowd’s energy is electrifying, giving me an extra boost.

“Thereโ€™s nothing like fighting in front of the people whoโ€™ve been supporting me from the start. Iโ€™m coming to steal the show and give everyone a night to remember.โ€

Training with Ismael Salas, Romero knows another loss would be devastating at this point in his career. Therefore, the Las Vegas native leaves no stone unturned in his quest for another triumph against James.

“This training camp has been one of the best I’ve had. We’ve focused on refining my technique, increasing my power, and sharpening my mental game,” stated Romero. “My team and I have put in countless hours in the gym, and I feel stronger and more prepared than ever. Coach Salas has pushed me to new limits, and Iโ€™m excited to showcase those improvements in the ring.

โ€œManuel Jaimes is a tough opponent, and Iโ€™m not taking him lightly. Heโ€™s got good skills and a lot of heart, but I believe my power and speed will be the difference. Iโ€™ve studied his style, and weโ€™ve put together a game plan that Iโ€™m confident will win this fight. I will win this fight because I have to win this fight. Thatโ€™s the only thing on my mind.โ€

Romero concluded, “A win against Jaimes will be a step back in the right direction. It opens up opportunities for bigger fights against all the big names.

“Iโ€™m looking to dominate and make a statement that Iโ€™m ready for anyone in the division. I want to add this guy to my highlight reel and set the stage for whatโ€™s next.”

Romero vs. James is part of a four-bout card for the Canelo vs. Berlanga PPV, which will be broadcast on Prime Video.
