Oscar De La Hoya proved his fighter lost with stats, says promoter

Oscar De La Hoya posted the CompuBox stats for Vergil Ortiz vs. Serhii Bohachuk to prove his fighter lost inadvertently.

Since Saturday, the Golden Boy promoter has been adamant that Ortiz did enough to win despite two knockdowns and intense debate over the decision, which ultimately went against Bohachuk. One judge scored a draw 113-113, while the other two saw it for Ortiz 114-112 at the Mandalay Bay.

However, many fans and backers of Bohachuk saw it differently and have contested the result ever since.

This week, De La Hoya proudly posted the statistics compiled by CompuBox for every round, boasting that those who didn’t see an Ortiz win ‘didn’t know s*** about boxing’ to use the famous Roger Mayweather phrase.

De La Hoya’s rival promoter, Tom Loeffler, wasn’t unhappy that the former fighter posted the numbers, though. He instead thanked De La Hoya for pointing out that his fighter Bohachuk won while offering an explanation.

“Thank you, Oscar, for posting CompuBox numbers. You just made my point,” said Loeffler. Serhii Bohachuk scored knockdowns in rounds one and eight and outlanded Vergil in rounds four, six, seven, and ten. Thatโ€™s six rounds plus the two points for the knockdowns. Any way you look at it, Bohachuk should still be the WBC Interim champion,” added the 360 boss.

Accompanying the statistics, CompuBox said about the Fight of the Year contender, “This was a firefight from start to finish, with the combatants throwing a total of 1,579 punches.

“Bohachuk threw 85 more punches, but Ortiz landed 40 more punches. Bohacuk scored a knockdown in the first round, which was initially ruled a slip, but it was overturned by replay at the beginning of the fifth round. Bohachuk knocked Ortiz down again in the eighth round, but Ortiz stormed back in the round to hurt Bohachuk while landing 16 power punches to Bohachukโ€™s 11.

“Over rounds eight through twelve, Ortiz out-landed Bohachuk 112 to 89. In the championship rounds, Ortiz landed 56 punches to Bohachukโ€™s 40. One judge scored the fight a 113-113 draw, while the other two judges scored the fight 114-112 for the new WBC Interim World Super Welterweight Champion, Vergil Ortiz.”

Bohachuk was convinced he’d done enough in the aftermath.

“Won a great fight and lost a bad decision. Fight of the Year candidate. Those who understand boxing know what just happened.”

Loeffler then added, “Our Champion Serhii Bohachuk coming into a great reception. [His] Face looks clean while Vergil [not so much]. The fans know who won that fight.”

Frank Stallone, brother of Sylvester and both stars of the Rocky franchise, aired his view in response to Bohachuk’s post. Stallone sided with a Bohachuk victory.

“The worst-case scenario would be a draw, and he [Bohachuk] retains his title. It was the Fight of the Year. To me, you have to really take it away from the champ. I think Serhii won. He showed valor in battle and class throughout,” commented Stallone.
