LAS VEGAS — Unified super welterweight world champion Sebastian Fundora remains poised to compete in big fight after big fight.
The 26-year-old fighter, who is 6-foot-6 and 154 pounds, rebounded from a seventh-round knockout loss to Brian Mendoza by defeating Tim Tszyu by split decision in a bloody barnburner earlier this year.
The Tszyu victory saw Fundora win the WBO and vacant WBC super welterweight championship titles.
Fundora didn’t have long before he seemingly had his first official challenger as Texas superstar Errol Spence Jr. entered the ring to push for a fight.
Though Premier Boxing Champions has organized a further three box office events since the Fundora-Tszyu opener on Prime Video, Fundora’s next opponent — be it against Spence, a rematch against Tszyu, or even a fight against Terence Crawford — remains unclear.
“I don’t know [if we’ll get Fundora vs Spence this year],” boxing promoter Sampson Lewkowicz told World Boxing News. “We’re waiting for the WBO to negotiate on Monday, for Crawford.”
The WBO mandated earlier in the summer that Fundora, the new WBO champ, has to put their championship belt on the line for a bout against Crawford, who won the WBA and vacant WBO interim titles on August 3 with his decision win over Israil Madrimov.
WBN asked Lewkowicz if Fundora vs. Crawford could take place first over Fundora vs. Spence. “That’s correct,” the veteran talent-spotter told us.
“It could be Crawford or Spence, depending on which way the WBA goes.”
Regarding other options for Fundora, Lewkowicz added: “I strongly believe sooner or later we will face Tim Tszyu.
“That is the fight that the people want. And this is the fight that I like to deliver because I promise I will deliver it.”
Finishing, he said: “And hopefully, both of them will have the biggest payday of their life.”
