Tommy Morrison’s hard-hitting son Kenzie is set to face the heavyweight who knocked out his brother Trey in December 2021, WBN has learned.
Kenzie, who last fought in late 2023, has 19 stoppages from 21 wins against one defeat and two draws. As World Boxing News reported, Kenzie has been chasing a fight with Jake Paul or Tommy Fury to secure his family’s future.
As he waits to see if those moves bear fruit, Morrison will return next month to fight dangerous puncher Mike Balogun. The 40-year-old wiped out Kenzie’s older sibling, Trey, in 161 seconds, inflicting his only career loss to date. Balogun scored two stoppages in 2022 before running into Murat Gassiev last year. The tough former cruiserweight took Balogun out in the second round.
Since his defeat to Balogun, Trey had taken time out from the sport before being involved in two serious automobile accidents. Trey is taking recovery day-by-day, and it’s not a certainty that he will ever fight again.
As promoter Tony Holden explained, Kenzie gets the opportunity to avenge the knockout in his absence.
“We have been working on getting Kenzie Morrison a meaningful fight. I received a call from my partner Lou DiBella, and he confirmed Mike Balogun is in. Both fighters have agreed as contracts will be signed to make it official.
“Kenzie Morrison 21-1 vs Mike Balogun 21-1 to take place October 23, at Madison Square Garden. Balogun is known for his win over Morrison’s brother, Trey Lippe Morrison. Kenzie vows to avenge his brother’s loss by taking the most competitive fight of his career.
“Kenzie Morrison is the son of legendary Heavyweight Champion Tommy “The Duke” Morrison. We have amazing sponsorship packages for Kenzie, including great seats at Madison Square Garden. Contact me, and I will schedule a call with Lou DiBella and myself to discuss the details.”
The news comes just two days after the eleventh anniversary of Tommy’s untimely death. Both brothers have fought in their father’s image and name since turning professional. They both wear the Stars and Stripes adopted by Tommy during his career after he appeared in the Rocky Franchise as Tommy ‘The Machine’ Gunn alongside Sylvester Stallone.
On October 23, those famous trunks will enter the ropes again in New York City, bidding to erase the memory of an unexpected reverse.
