Chris Eubank Jr. had to retract his statement hours after calling three UK promoters’ scumbags’ due to a legal threat by Frank Warren.
Warren took exception to Eubank Jr.’s statement despite the Brighton man calling Kalle Sauerland and Eddie Hearn the same insult. The trouble with Warren’s comments was that Eubank stated that Warren had “been lying and cheating his way through boxing for the last couple of decades.”
He added that Warren “sued me for a couple of hundred thousand [pounds] a few years ago. The guy is a scumbag.”
Speaking to talkSPORT immediately after the press conference, Warren threatened to sue Eubank if he didn’t retract the statement.
“He was sued by me for a legal breach of a contract. I was successful in suing him. He paid substantial damages. Regarding what he’s just said, I’m going to keep it short and sweet: he will get sued again,” warned Warren.
Within hours, Eubank released an apology to avoid another messy legal situation involving the London-based Queensberry boss.
“Following today’s press conference for the historic Riyadh Season event on October 12, I would like to retract my inaccurate statements and apologize to Frank Warren, Eddie Hearn, and Kalle Sauerland. “I now wish to focus purely on boxing and preparing for a huge fight in Riyadh next month.”
Alongside Eubank’s statement, Warren was the only one of the three to respond to the official BOXXER post. Promoter Warren decided to offer his own apology.
“I accept Chris’s apology and retraction. But I, too, have said things before and apologize to him if any criticism of him has upset him in the past. I look forward to seeing him compete on this huge Riyadh Season card. We look ahead to some potentially massive bouts in the future.”
Eubank is now free to focus on his upcoming fight rather than being told to report to court for another round of legal jabs with Warren. The former IBO champion battles Kamil Szeremeta on the October 12 Riyadh Season card topped by Beterbiev vs Bivol.
A win puts Eubank on course for a money-spinning clash with Conor Benn after fights against Canelo Alvarez and Hamzah Sheeraz failed to get over the line.
