Canelo gave coach ‘a bonus’ when gloved up and needing to pee

Canelo Alvarez says coach and good friend Eddy Reynoso got his ‘bonus’ when the gloved-up Mexican superstar needed the toilet.

Before facing Miguel Cotto in November 2015, Canelo was moments from the ring when nature called. The former undisputed super middleweight champion then had to call on someone in the dressing room for help.

Reynoso, his trainer alongside father Chepo since Canelo first entered a boxing gym as a child, drew the short straw. Speaking to Big Boy on a recent podcast chat, Canelo gleefully explained what happened in his English accent.

Big Boy asked, “After they come in and the commission tape you up, they put the initials and seal you up. What happens if you have to p***?”

Canelo responded, “It’s a funny story. When I fought with Miguel Angel Cotto, I had everything: the gloves, the cup, and everything else.

“I said to my friend [Eddy], Hey, I need to go pee, and he said and what? I’m like, help me. How am I going to pull out that thing, you know?

“He pulled out that thing, and I peed. I said you need to do it because I’m going to wet my shorts.”

The three-belt titleholder then clarified that it was Reynoso before Big Boy added, “Who would have known that before you fought Cotto, your manager shook your d*** out? Now we know.”

He concluded, “Did you give him a bonus that night?”

Canelo laughed, “No, that was his bonus!”

The pair enjoy a long-lasting bond in the sport, probably solidified by that night. Eddy and Canelo continue to enjoy one of the most significant partnerships in boxing, one that never seems like it will end.

On September 14, they team up again to face Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas as Canelo aims to keep a firm grip on the top spot at 168 pounds.

No matter what happens during the event, he can always rely on Eddy.
